2.  PEI GRAN FONDO

A group of VCC members descended upon Charlottetown PEI, the cradle of the Canadian Confederation, and how did the bough break!  Spearheaded by Frank Mazzuca #2, the group went in search of the finest Atlantic lobster and mussels (Did you know that the vast majority of mussels consumed in North America are grown in the brackish waters of PEI?  Bet you didn’t.  But now you know.). So they went down for lobster and mussels and happened to get in 3 spectacular rides along the way.  Many thanks to Frank #2 for taking the reins and organizing the group.  It was small, but it was the first year and already twice the number of people have committed to next year’s event so watch for it at our open house  in the Spring as it is sure to be agenda.
3.  GIRO del VENETO – RELOADED

Just after Frank Mazzuca #2 and company returned from PEI, Frank Mazzuca (the original) and 27 others headed out for Venice to reprise the 2014 Giro del Veneto.  I must say that the trip did not start well: did the seats on air Canada Rouge get smaller or did my seat get larger?  It doesn’t matter because we were like sardines in a tin can and the stewardesses did not offer much in the way of eye candy.  Hey, if you can’t move around for 8 hours at least provide some nice scenery – just saying.
After a slow start due to the rain, the trip proved to be in many ways just as good and even a bit better than the 2014 edition and that’s saying a lot considering that we hit the ball out of the park 3 years ago.  Rides included a visit to El Presidente’s home town (and that of Pope Pius X), Riese Pio X; a ride that circumscribed Monte Cristallo and ended in Cortina d’Ampezzo; a ride along Lago di Garda with spectacular views of the hills of Bardolino on one side and the lake on the other; visits to the Francesco Moser (oops, Campione Moser) winery, Milan and Mantova.  When we happened onto the main square in Mantova we witnessed the start of the 1000 mile Nuvolari classic car race – it was as though it was planned just for us.  And the food and wine ….. what can be said about the food and wine to do them any justice?
Anyway, I leave you with a couple of pictures because uploading more than that is too much work for me.  However, I ask that you follow the YouTube link.  The President was interviewed by local TV and a lot of people must have seen it because we were recognized wherever we went from town to town.  Cars – even trucks – would move aside for us, little old ladies dressed in black would come out their front doors to wave white handkerchiefs, complete strangers would offer a spritz or an espresso – we were rock stars.

4. CAMPANILE DEDICATION – October 14
The Campanile the San Marco (the bell tower thatsits in the middle of the driveway) will be officially dedicated on October 14 at 5:30pm.  Eveyone is invited to attend the ceremony which will include perofrmances by the Veneto Choir, speeches by a couple of dignitaries, blessing of thebells, ribbon cutting and then the ringing of the bells … Hallelujah.
The ceremony will also include representatives of all the facets of the Veneto Centre and that includes the VCC.  We would like to have a small contingent of members dressed in their Sunday Best to be present.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Rick Marchesan at venetocyclingclub@venetocentre.com  by Sunday October 8.
Thank you to all that answer the call.

5.  ONTARIO CYCLING ASSOCIATION AWARDS BANQUET  at the VENETO CENTRE – NOV 4
The Veneto Centre and the VCC will add another feather in their caps as the Veneto Centre is to play host to the OCA (Ontario Cycling Association) Awards Banquet this November 4.  We’ve put in nominations for some of our own in a couple of award categories so perhaps we’ll bring home a new cap as well as the feathers. If you would like to attend, go onto the OCA website for more info.
